If [then stares stairs stares] #2 is, at present, made of watercolour and lead pencil on paper and measures 40 cm high and 30 cm wide.
If, however, the watercolour pattern were to be made into a hand-knotted rug and placed, for instance, in a living room, it would become a sculptural situation.
As a rug, it would measure 4m x 3m.
As a sculptural situation, the first stares of the title belong to living participants who sit in chairs around the rug in a living room. These stares lead to the rug’s edge, even if they dart over the rug when speaking with others. The title’s second stairs then lead through the rug’s terrain to, yes, more stares (or chairs in which to sit and converse with another opposite).

Acknowledgement
I acknowledge the Kulin Nation’s Yaluk-ut Weelam clan of the Boon Wurrung people as custodians of the lands, waterways and skies where I live and work. I pay my respect to their Elders past, present and emerging. I recognise their cultural faithfulness, strength and resilience against the trauma of colonisation. First Peoples’ sovereignty has never been ceded.
